Toomers for Tuscaloosa

Toomers for Tuscaloosa

If you know anything about football you know about the fierce rivalry between Auburn University and the University of Alabama. When the trees at Toomers Corner were poisoned by *that* Alabama fan, the Crimson Tide Nation stepped up to show their support for the legendary trees, and in part for Auburn. Now Auburn fans are standing up to support the tragedy in Tuscaloosa.

A group has been created on FaceBook called Toomers For Tuscaloosa.

The Pioneer Woman has even Blogged about supporting the Tuscaloosa (and other places in Alabama that were effected) — she is donating (4) $500 donations to a charity of the winners choice.  She would prefer the money be donated to a charity that will help the tornado victims, but is not limiting it.  All you have to do is comment with your charity of choice.   Go to her blog….post a comment….put Toomers for Tuscaloosa.  Also, for every comment she will donate $0.25 to a “reputable/reliable organization providing direct relief and supplies to tornado victims”

End of the Season…

7 Mar

Both of my kiddos wanted season tickets to Auburn Athletics for Christmas.  They told us that if they couldn’t have *anything* else (we had a very tight Christmas this past year) all they wanted were Gymnastics season tickets (Girly Girl and me) and Saturday SEC Package Basketball (Button Boy and Mojo).  So, what did they get?  Their respective season tickets…and #2 jerseys!  (CAM!) (btw, Mojo got a #2 jersey, also!)

Button Boy and Mojo had a lot of fun at their basketball games.  They got to see Auburn lose to Alabama, Vandy, LSU, and Arkansas, but he got to see them win against Mississippi State in a great comeback!  Button Boy really doesn’t care too much if they win or lose at this point.  He is just happy to be there cheering and eating stadium food!

Girly Girl and I have gotten to see Auburn win against LSU, Kentucky, and Pittsburgh…and lose against Arkansas.  We still have a meet against SEMO on the 11th.  Being season ticket holders, we also got invited to the end of season celebration.  John Roethlisberger, US Gymnastic Olympian 1992, 1996, & 2000, will be speaking.  Girly Girl is very excited about the opportunity to meet a real Gymnastic Olympian!!  I’ll have my camera ready, don’t worry!

One thing I wanted to mention about the gymnastics team at Auburn…after every meet the Auburn gymnasts have come to the season ticket holder section and told the section thank you for supporting their sport.  I think it is an awesome small thing that makes Auburn Athletics so great!

I don’t know a lot about competitive gymnastics, but am learning…I really do believe that Jeff Graba did a great job this season…and look forward to many more!

I am very sad to see Rachel Innis leave this year.  She has been one of the shining stars over the last two seasons!  Her personality is so much fun, and she always makes time for the girls…all the girls, not just mine!  We love you, Rachel!

(…and the crowd goes wild!)

We are going to miss all the girls during the off-season…and can’t wait to see them next season!!!

Okay, I have a really bad crush….on Aubie!  I absolutely adore his fun personality and think he is absolutely adorable!!!!

A totally crazy crush…yes, HI, I’m addicted to Aubie!

What a cutie!

Now, onto the last autograph session…

We love you, Auburn Gymnasts!  Good luck at Regionals!

War Eagle Snow!

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University says someone deliberately poisoned trees at Toomer’s Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.

The university said in a statement Wednesday that a herbicide commonly used to kill trees was applied “in lethal amounts” to the soil around the two trees, and that they likely can’t be saved.

Auburn discovered the poisoning after taking soil samples on Jan. 28, a day after a man called a syndicated radio show based in Birmingham saying he had used the herbicide on the trees.

“The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer’s trees,” the caller told The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, saying he was at the Iron Bowl.

Calling himself “Al from Dadeville,” he said he used Spike 80DF, also known as tebuthiuron, and the trees “definitely will die.” The caller signed off with, “Roll Damn Tide.”

Later Thursday, WTVM in Columbus, Ga., reported that police arrested Harvey Almorn Updyke, 62, on a charge of criminal mischief. His bond is set at $50,000, the station reported.

Auburn fans traditionally celebrate by using toilet paper to roll the Toomer’s Corner trees, which are estimated to be more than 130 years old.

“We will take every step we can to save the Toomer’s oaks, which have been the home of countless celebrations and a symbol of the Auburn spirit for generations of Auburn students, fans, alumni and the community,” university President Jay Gogue said in a statement.

City police are investigating the incident. The use of Spike 80DF is also governed by state agricultural laws and the Environmental Protection Agency. The university said it doesn’t use the herbicide.

“We are assessing the extent of the damage and proceeding as if we have a chance to save the trees,” said Gary Keever, an Auburn University professor of horticulture and a member of Auburn’s Tree Preservation Committee. “We are also focused on protecting the other trees and shrubs in Samford Park. At this level the impact could be much greater than just the oaks on the corner, as Spike moves through the soil to a wide area.”

A small group gathered and rolled the trees Wednesday afternoon.

The soil samples were tested at Mississippi State.

The amount of herbicide detected in four samples ranged from 0.78 parts per million — described by Auburn as “a very lethal dose” — to 51 parts per million.

“This herbicide is extremely active and persistent,” Keever said. “It’s very likely to be in the soil for 3 to 5 years.”

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

2011 Auburn Gymnastics has Begun!

9 Jan

Auburn had their first gymnastics meet for the 2011 Collegiate season this past Friday night.  We were not present *only* because it was out of town at Iowa State.  Beginning the season, Auburn was ranked No. 13 and Iowa State was ranked No. 22, but as with other sports, home “field” advantage makes a difference in these meets.  Auburn lost the meet by less than 1 point.

BFF's E & E @ Toomer's!

BFF's E & E

Girly Girl and I have our season tickets ready for the home meets.  Once again, we will be going with my BFF “E” and her two daughters, Tom Boy Girl and Drama Girl.  We will also be spending some of the season with one of my sisters, KB and my sweet niece Squirrel Girl!  We love Auburn….football, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, baseball…you name it….we love it!

With that being said…tomorrow is the most important day in Auburn football since 1957….our chance at a National Championship.  We will be watching with BFF “E” and her girls (and we hope her Alabama fan dh, J&P) and we will probably be dining on Fried “Duck” and some snacks and sweets!
